Chromatography, Separation Science and Impurity Identification
Chromatography is central to the analysis of active pharmaceutical ingredients, intermediates and finished products. As well as the standard HPLC equipment, the PMBRC has two Agilent ultra performance LC systems which allow the rapid resolution of components in a fraction of the time required by conventional HPLC methods. Current research involves the use of microemulsion chemistry and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) to improve the resolution of complex mixtures. The PMBRC also has LC-MS and GC-MS capability which, when coupled with photo diode array detectors, preparative chromatography and NMR, enables the full identification of impurities, degradation compounds and pathways. A recent project with a local pharmaceutical company isolated and identified three degradation compounds observed in tablets on stability.
